Lefkada, Kefalonia, Meganisi, and Ithaka

On the 2nd of June, a group of journalists and I flew from Vienna to Aktion National Airport in Preveza on a press trip organized by the Greek Tourism board and My Austrian holidays.

That was the beginning of a great adventure. We were set to explore 4 islands in the Ionian sea: Lefkada Kefalonia, Meganisi, and Ithaka.

Four Greek islands that I have never been before. I was excited to see these new places and capture their natural beauty with my camera.

Once we landed in Preveza, we were transferred to Lefkada island where we spent the first 3 days of our press trip. At this point, I would like to thank our travel guide Mr. Spiros Zampelis for spending everyday with us during our stay, and showing us around the beauty of Lefkada.

It was so nice to have a great guide, such as Mr. Zampelis. It made our whole travel experience in a new place so much more interesting and meaningful.

The Best Guide to Folegandros island

The best Guide to Folegandros island

During the previous winter, I asked my friends about their experiences in Folegandros. Surprisingly, the majority of them had not been to the island, and neither had I. This prompted me to consider changing that and sparked the idea of planning a trip to Folegandros.

One possible reason for my friends’ lack of visits to Folegandros could be the proximity of Santorini, Greece’s most popular island. Given the choice between the two, most people tend to opt for Santorini. However, I personally held no reservations about exploring a lesser-known destination like Folegandros. In fact, I found the idea quite intriguing, and I was confident that I would fall in love with the island from the moment we arrived. And indeed, that’s exactly what happened.

The memory of our arrival at Karavostasi port is still vivid in my mind. Despite the relatively short 4-and-a-half-hour trip on the fast ferry, we were incredibly tired. We had woken up early to catch the 7 am departure. However, the moment we set foot on Folegandros and beheld the enchanting sight of the white-washed houses against the backdrop of the island’s natural beauty, our exhaustion swiftly dissipated, replaced by a wave of excitement and euphoria.

HOW LONG SHOULD YOU SPEND ON FOLEGANDROS

Contrary to the advice we had received, stating that one week on Folegandros would be too long, we chose to ignore it. My response to those skeptics would be: “While one week is sufficient to explore the island, if you truly want to savor and fully enjoy its wonders, staying longer is highly recommended.”

Given unlimited time and resources, my recommendation would be to indulge in an extended period of relaxation and enjoyment.

A Guide to Folegandros island: How to Get Around the island

The best Guide to Folegandros island

Folegandros is a small island, so getting around is quite easy and can be done on foot, by bus, or by taxi. If you plan to explore the island, it is recommended to rent a car or a motorbike.

Car rental is available on the island, but it is best to book in advance, especially during peak season. You will need a valid driver’s license, and you must be at least 21 years old to rent a car. Gas stations are available in the main town, Chora, and in the port of Karavostasis.

Another popular way to get around Folegandros is by motorbike. A motorbike can be rented at various locations on the island, and they offer a fun and adventurous way to explore the island’s narrow streets and off-road paths.

If you prefer not to drive, Folegandros has a reliable public transportation system. Buses run frequently between Chora and the island’s main villages, including Ano Meria and Karavostasis. Bus tickets can be purchased at the bus station in Chora or on the bus.

Taxis are also available on the island, but they can be expensive, especially if you plan to use them for long-distance travel. Taxis can be hailed on the street or reserved in advance by phone.

No matter how you choose to get around Folegandros, be sure to bring comfortable shoes as the island’s terrain can be quite hilly and rugged. Also, remember to drive or ride safely, especially on narrow roads with steep drops.
