Kinsterna Hotel

At the end of August this summer, I was lucky enough to spend five wonderful days at Kinsterna hotel in Monemvasia. These are my photos.

Kinsterna Hotel

The Kinsterna Hotel is a Byzantine-era rural mansion, which was lovingly and superbly restored with great respect to its long history. All activities that took place in the past on the premises have been revived in an effort to keep them alive. The goal was to make the mansion self-sufficient.

Today, the estate produces its own wine, extra virgin olive oil and table olives, tsipouro, bread, marmalade and other fruit preserves, soap and much more.

The mansion’s long history dates back to the Byzantine era. The manor’s architectural and morphological features testify to the building’s Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman heritage and identity. The earliest known owner was Ibrahim Bey. Probably one of the local Ottoman landlords who signed the delivery of Monemvasia in 1821.

The manor was lived in until the late 1970’s by the “Lady of Monemvasia” Lina Kapitsini. The main objective of its restoration was the maintenance of the original architecture using traditional building techniques, old and local natural materials.

ONAR IN PATMOS ISLAND

ONAR IN PATMOS ISLAND

At the end of June, we had the pleasure of staying and photographing Onar in Patmos island, a resort hotel named after the Greek word for dream.

ONAR IN PATMOS ISLAND

Just a few meters away from the shore, close to the fishing village of Grikos, ONAR 1989 is surrounded by a beautiful landscape overlooking the Aegean Sea and the nearby rock of Kalikatsou that emerges from the deep blue waters in an almost unearthly manner.

ONAR IN PATMOS ISLAND

We stayed at a contemporary stonewall house for two. The house offered a private terrace and a magnificent view to the swimming pool overlooking the sea.

ONAR IN PATMOS ISLAND

The ideal location for a dream holiday for families, couples or group of friends who are looking for a luxurious and tranquil environment as a base to explore Patmos island from, or to just relax in.

Traditional house Langada

Traditional house Langada

We finally made it to Patmos island this summer! We had the chance to spend two amazing nights at the Traditional house Langada, and discover the beautiful and peaceful area of upper Kampos. The traditional house Langada belongs to Nicoletta Houses.

Nicoletta says:

“In 1971, my mother, Dolly Kontogianni, set her foot for the first time at the port of Patmos island. It was love at first sight. She was immediately captivated by the island’s special energy. She soon found a plot in Chora, the island’s medieval capital, where she was planning to build a typical Chora mansion. Dolly was a restless spirit and loved houses! She never stopped exploring the island’s houses and plots until she discovered the 40-acre estate “Langada”.

There was a farmhouse in ruinous condition, which had developed during the centuries, around a small chapel and a central patio. As it can be read on the chapel’s lintel, it was built in 1698. Rumours says that the chapel and the room next to it had been used by generations of monks of the St John monastery, who wished to lead an ascetic mode of life and cultivate the land. The estate belonged to 30 heirs. As you can imagine, the buying process was very complicated.

Dolly finally managed to acquire the property in 1973. She slowly started restoring the house, strictly following the traditional building techniques and architectural style. This project which lasted 5 years. Since then, we have spent numerous summer and easter holidays with friends and family.”

We are currently going through the third, maybe fourth, fifth (oh,I’ve lost the count) lockdown in Vienna. I had photos in my hard drives that were waiting for me to edit them. I don’t know why I kept them for so long there. Last night I decided to have a look on what is left unedited and to finally go though the process: edit, select and publish! The shops in Vienna will open next Monday and I can’t wait to buy an external Hard Drive because those I have are all full!
