Syros Greece: Travel Guide 2024

During my visit, I discovered that Syros island is a breathtaking spot in the Aegean Sea that doesn’t get as much attention as it deserves. This place is a blend of everything I love: gorgeous beaches, adorable villages, and layers of history waiting to be explored. I found myself wandering through Ermoupoli, getting lost in its history, and then lounging on beaches that seemed straight out of a postcard. And the food? Simply divine. Syros is a paradise for anyone, whether you’re into soaking up history, sunbathing by the sea, or savoring every bite of Greek cuisine. It’s a place that offers a little bit of magic for all types of travelers.

First timer’s guide to Syros

For anyone stepping onto Syros for the first time, you’re in for a real treat. My first piece of advice? Wander the quaint streets of Ermoupoli, where history and modern life blend seamlessly. Don’t miss the beaches of Galissas and Kini, perfect spots for anyone looking to soak up the sun or dive into crystal-clear waters. And oh, the food! Make sure to try local favorites like loukoumades and halva, treats that will have your taste buds dancing. Strolling along the waterfront as the sun sets, admiring the town’s beautiful architecture, is an experience you won’t want to miss. Trust me, Syros has a way of making every visitor feel right at home.

Syros island Travel Guide: Where to stay in Syros island

Finding the perfect spot to stay in Syros was an adventure itself! The island is dotted with a variety of accommodations that cater to every taste and budget. I opted for a cozy guesthouse near Ermoupoli for its central location and easy access to local sights.

But if you’re someone who dreams of waking up to the sound of the waves, the beachside options in Galissas are just incredible. Each place has its own charm, offering a warm welcome to travelers.

Remember, booking early is key, especially if you’re visiting during the busy summer season. It’s all about finding that perfect home away from home on this beautiful island.

How many days do you need in Syros?

When planning my trip to Syros, I wondered how much time I’d need to truly soak in its beauty. After experiencing its charm, I’d say spending at least a week on the island is ideal. This allows you ample time to wander through the enchanting villages, bask in the sun on its serene beaches, and indulge in the exquisite local cuisine.

Syros isn’t a place to rush through; it’s where you immerse yourself in each moment. Whether you’re exploring solo, with family, or friends, a week gives you a perfect balance to experience Syros’s diverse offerings without feeling hurried.

Ermoupoli, The Town of Syros

Ermoupoli took my breath away. It’s the heart of Syros, teeming with life, from its bustling port to the cozy cafes tucked into every corner. Walking through its streets is like stepping back in time, surrounded by beautiful neoclassical buildings. I made sure to lose myself in its narrow alleys, each turn revealing something new and beautiful. Climbing up to the Church of Anastasi was a highlight, offering me the most stunning views over the town. And the art scene? It’s vibrant and alive, with galleries and theaters full of local talent that left me in awe. Ermoupoli is not just a town; it’s the soul of Syros, and it captured a piece of my heart.

A guide to Mykonos

Upon my arrival in Mykonos, everybody was asking me the same question: “first time here”?
No, it wasn’t the first time visiting Mykonos. The first one was many, many years ago. My first visit was many years ago and it was based on a lie. I lied to my boss back then. I said that I was ill and left with a friend for a weekend in Mykonos.

This time, my friend and I got a little bit too excited during our stay in Mykonos because of all the beauty around us. We loved roaming around and let our instinct drive us through the alleys of the little town. If you visit Mykonos, pay attention to the details around you.

A guide to Mykonos – how long should you spend in Mykonos

The ideal duration for your stay in Mykonos depends on your interests, preferences, and travel itinerary. While some travelers may find that a few days are sufficient to experience the highlights of the island, others may prefer a longer stay to fully immerse themselves in its beauty and atmosphere.

For a brief visit focusing on the main attractions such as the iconic windmills, Little Venice, the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos, and the vibrant nightlife, a minimum of 2 to 3 days is recommended. This allows enough time to explore Mykonos Town (Chora) and perhaps venture to one or two of the nearby beaches.

However, if you wish to delve deeper into the island’s culture, history, and natural beauty, consider extending your stay to 4 to 7 days or more. This allows you to leisurely explore the charming villages, discover secluded beaches, indulge in delicious Greek cuisine, and perhaps even take day trips to nearby islands like Delos or Tinos.

Ultimately, the ideal duration for your Mykonos getaway depends on your personal preferences and how much time you have available. Whether you’re seeking a quick escape or a longer vacation filled with relaxation and exploration, Mykonos offers something for every traveler to enjoy.

Petros, the famous Mykonos pelican

In one of those photos you will see Petros, the pink pelican. Petros is the cutest bird I have ever seen. I had a quick conversation with the woman who takes care of him. She told me that there were three pelicans on the island. Now there is only one left.

She set Petros free every morning and before the sunset, she is looking for him to bring him back home. If she doesn’t find her, she can’t sleep. Having and taking care of an animal is a big responsibility and this adorable animal left me to touch him and caress him.

The woman pointed out that Petros doesn’t let anyone caress him. I guess this was a good sign that Petros and I became friends. What a pity I couldn’t pack him and take him with me to Vienna. : ) We also saw many dogs and cats on the streets of Mykonos. It seems that they were all taking naps and I am sure they were also annoyed by tourists like me who wanted to take photos of them.

The reputation of Mykonos island

Mykonos has the reputation worldwide of being a party island but for me and the way I conceived it, this island is something more than that. No doubt that here you can party until dawn, but this island has something special that you cannot describe with words.

A guide to Mykonos: Best time to visit

The best time to visit Mykonos largely depends on your preferences and what you aim to experience. The peak tourist season runs from late June to early September when the weather is hot and the island is buzzing with energy. This period is perfect for beach lovers, partygoers, and those looking to experience the vibrant atmosphere of Mykonos’ renowned nightlife. However, keep in mind that this is also the busiest time, with higher prices and crowded beaches. For a more relaxed experience with pleasant weather and fewer tourists, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of late spring (May and June) or early autumn (September and October). During these times, you can still enjoy warm temperatures, sunny days, and a more laid-back ambiance.

A guide to Mykonos: Where to stay

We had the chance to feel that “special” thing in the air, also thanks to the unbeatable hospitality at our boutique hotel Bill&Coo Suites and Lounge. Four days on this island resulted in more than 4.000 photos. That’s the reason that makes me call Mykonos the most instagrammable island. The worst thing you can do is visiting this island without your camera, or forgetting your battery/memory card at home.
