In Miami with Austrian Airlines

Have you ever heard of that saying: once a year go somewhere that you have never been to before? Miami was that place for me this year.

However Miami was not just one more travel destination; it was a once in a lifetime experience. Miami was another world, a new one and very different from Vienna. The language, currency, weather, people, landscape, architecture. Everything was different. Αnd I think that is what makes a city fascinating. At least to my eyes.

6 days in Miami

Within 6 days I tried to make the most of it. I tried to explore the city the best I could because truth is I don’t know if I will ever get back to Miami. Of course I wish, especially now that I know some lovely people who live there.

For that reason, I made a list of things to do in Miami before I got there to make sure that I will not miss anything during my visit.

What to do in Miami

I explored big the touristy part of Miami South beach on a pink bicycle. For the other part of the city, the less touristy, I used Uber and I had friends giving me rides. One thing to mention was that, to my surprise, I felt pretty safe. I felt safe going around Miami Beach with my bicycle despite my initial thoughts and concerns caused by the fact of being there alone. I‘ve been to the US two times in the past, but I was always together with friends. This was a solo trip to Miami, with occasionally meeting friends here and there, mostly on dinner time.

My stay in Miami

Therefore, my stay in Miami wasn’t actually holidays and relaxing. It was more sightseeing, going from one place to another and taking pictures all the time. Many pictures, from the sunrise till the sunset. It wasn’t an easy task. I was not familiar to the city and I didn’t know where to start and what to shoot (so many options haha).

But I managed to take around 2.500 photos. Some of them will be published on The Viennese Girl blog and there are already many photos on Instagram.

Overall, I would love to return to Miami. Especially during that period of time, when it’s cold in Europe and warm there.

I am both glad and grateful having had the chance to experience and fly with Austrian Airlines on their first flight to that city.

On the way back to Vienna, I had the honor to experience the business class for the first time in my life. Oh, gosh! If the business class is like this, so comfortable and pleasant, I wouldn’t mind flying around the globe twice drinking champagne above the clouds haha…

A few words about the photos of this blog post. I took them during my visit in Samos. It’s very hot here and when it’s so hot, either you stay somewhere under the shadow or you spend the whole day on the beach until sunset time. I bet you don’t want to take photos moving around and sweat, like I did.

Those photos where taken in Vathi and Pythagorio. More precisely, the photo with the spectacular view of Pythagorio was taken from the balcony of Hera 2 Hotel in Pythagorio and this is one more Samos tip, just in case you are thinking of visiting Samos and looking for a hotel with views to Pythagorio, then this hotel is for you.

And if you come to Greece, remember this word: kalimera (in Greek: καλημέρα). Kalimera means both Good morning and Have a nice day.

Photos by Antonio Giannakos

I have been dreaming of that specific place for a long time and have been patient till that day the cobblestone alleyways in Oia would lead me to the extraordinary scenery that would take my breath away. I did my research on the internet, I couldn’t be wrong. I wanted something special for the last weekend of August and I knew where I could find it. Once I arrived there, I closed my eyes, I reopened them, I pinched myself and later on I thought…Oh yes, dreams come true in Ikies.

Ikies and the view in front of its apartments is the dream of a photographer. I wanted to take pictures of each and every small detail of our beautiful maisonette, pictures of each and every angle of Ikies traditional houses. If you follow me on Instagram, you have already seen some of my pictures that were uploaded real time. I even took a selfie while I was waiting for my friend to come (generally I never take selfies, although that kind of photos seems to be very popular lately.) We then snapped some pictures together, trying at the same time to be quiet and discreet for the other guests of the hotel.

There are many luxury boutique hotels in Oia that have a panoramic view of caldera. What makes Ikies Traditional Houses different and stand out from the others is its key position. It is situated exactly on the edge of the village Oia, which means you don’t need to go out and walk around. You don’t need to leave your maisonette to go to the other part of the village to see the sunset, like loads of tourists do. Just sit in your balcony, and you will have all that you need that will make your stay unforgettable. A better position cannot be found in Oia.

Needless to write more, just to thank the lovely girls at the reception and the whole staff for their kind welcome and their excellent service.
