Every June we go island hopping! This year we chose Leros island to be the first island for our Greek Island hopping!

It was my second visit to Leros island! I came back again to see what has changed in the meantime! I was particularly excited for going back to the Mylos by the sea taverna in Agia Marina (it’s a must visit)!

We also loved Psaropoula restaurant in Panteli! I couldn’t find a website for the restaurant but everything is easy to be found in Leros! Just ask the locals and they will guide you!

For our stay we chose Nefeli Hotel.

Location and getting there

Leros is a small Greek island located in the Dodecanese group of islands in the Aegean Sea. The island is situated between Patmos and Kalymnos, making it an ideal destination for island hopping.

To reach Leros, you can take a direct flight to Athens International Airport, and then hop on a domestic flight to Leros Airport. Alternatively, you can take a ferry from Piraeus or one of the neighbouring islands.

If you’re arriving by ferry, you’ll most likely dock at the main port of Laki, which is a picturesque village located in the south of the island. Once you arrive, there are many options for transportation, including renting a car or scooter or taking a taxi.

Best way to get to Leros island: Leros island has an airport and it’s quite far away from Athens. I would say that the easiest and fastest way is by airplane.

Leros Island may be small, but it is definitely worth the journey. Its unspoiled natural beauty, crystal-clear waters, and traditional Greek charm are sure to take your breath away. So, pack your bags, grab your camera, and get ready to experience a unique side of Greece that you won’t soon forget.

What to do in Leros island

A guide to Leros Island wouldn’t be complete without exploring the island’s many attractions. Despite its relatively small size, Leros is packed with things to do and see. Here are some of the top things to add to your itinerary:

Discover the island’s history at the Castle of Panteli and the War Museum

The Castle of Panteli is an imposing fortress built by the Knights of Saint John in the 14th century. Today, visitors can explore the castle’s walls and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding sea. Meanwhile, the War Museum offers a fascinating look at the island’s role in World War II.

My first visit to the island was a press trip organised by the Greek Tourism board in Austria. This time though, I enjoyed the island a little bit more cause I was free to discover the island the way I like, go to the places I personally chose and spend as much time as I wanted there.

You can find my blog post from my first visit here.

The windmills of the Pandeli Castle

One of the most iconic and unique sights on Leros island are the windmills located on the hillside of Pandeli Castle. Dating back to the 19th century, these windmills were used to grind wheat into flour, which was an important industry on the island at the time.

Today, the windmills have been restored and are a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can climb up to the top of the windmills for a stunning panoramic view of the island and the Aegean Sea.

I highly recommend visiting the windmills of the Pandeli Castle for a glimpse into the island’s rich history and a picturesque spot for taking photos. Don’t forget to bring comfortable shoes for the climb up the hillside and a camera to capture the stunning views from the top.

The windmills of the Pandeli Castle are a must-see on any visit to Leros island and a testament to the island’s unique and fascinating past.
