Island hopping in Croatia

Island hopping in Croatia is an adventure of a lifetime! With over 1,000 islands in the Adriatic Sea, it’s no wonder why Croatia has become one of the most popular island-hopping destinations in the world.

Whether you are looking to explore idyllic fishing villages, swim in the crystal-clear turquoise waters, or explore ancient ruins, Croatia has something for everyone.

From historic towns and stunning national parks to medieval castles and centuries-old vineyards, island hopping in Croatia offers a unique experience that should be on everyone’s bucket list.

Last week I had the chance to visit and explore these islands in Croatia: Rab island, Krk and Losijn.

I flew from Vienna to Zagreb airport. It’s only a 40 minutes flight. A driver picked me up from the airport and we drove to Rijeka. We kicked off the boat tour from Rijeka the next day.

In this blog post I share with you my best travel tips and my photos.

When is the best time to visit the islands in Croatia?

The best time to visit the Croatian islands for island hopping depends on your preferences and what you’re looking to experience. Generally, the summer months of June, July, and August are the busiest and most popular for tourists due to the warmer weather and many festivals and events that take place. However, if you prefer fewer crowds and cooler weather, visiting in the spring or fall could be the perfect time for you.

During the spring months of April and May, the temperatures are mild, and the crowds are much smaller than in the summer. This could be an excellent opportunity to explore the islands at your own pace without worrying about crowds of tourists. Additionally, the landscape is in full bloom, and you’ll get to experience the island’s beautiful scenery at its best.

Similarly, visiting the islands in the fall months of September and October provides a quieter experience, with fewer tourists around. The weather is still warm, and you’ll have a chance to experience the islands’ traditional autumnal festivals and events.

It’s worth noting that some islands in Croatia, such as Hvar and Korcula, are more popular with tourists, meaning they’ll be busier all year round. However, if you want to explore the lesser-known islands, such as Vis or Mljet, you’ll have a better chance of avoiding the crowds.

What is the best way to island hop in Croatia?

There are a few different options when it comes to island hopping in Croatia. One popular choice is to take a ferry between the islands. This is a convenient option as there are regular ferry services between the islands and you can easily purchase tickets in advance. You can also choose to book a tour that includes island hopping as part of the itinerary.

Another option is to rent a boat or yacht and explore the islands on your own. This gives you more flexibility and freedom to explore at your own pace. Keep in mind that you will need a valid boating license and some experience navigating the waters if you choose this option.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you could even try kayaking or paddleboarding between the islands. This is a great way to experience the natural beauty of the islands up close and personal.

No matter which option you choose, make sure to do your research beforehand and plan your itinerary accordingly. Some islands are only accessible by certain modes of transportation and some ferry routes only run on certain days. With a little bit of planning, you can make the most of your island hopping adventure in Croatia.

How do I plan island hopping in Croatia?

Island hopping in Croatia is an adventure that requires careful planning to ensure that you get the most out of your experience. The first step in planning your island hopping journey is to determine how many islands you want to visit and how long you want to stay on each. Once you have decided on this, you can begin to research the best way to travel between the islands.

The easiest and most popular way to get around the Croatian islands is by taking a ferry. Many different ferry companies operate in the area, so it’s important to research which company offers the best routes and prices for your specific needs. Alternatively, you can hire a boat or even charter a yacht if you’re feeling extra fancy.
