Every old coffee house in Vienna has a story. Did you know that this coffeehouse is where the love story between Leopold and Josefine took place? Leopold began to work in the Deierl restaurant, where he met Josefine. They got married and they later opened Café Hawelka in Dorotheergasse.
One more exciting thing to mention is that there is no menu; say no to a usual menu made of paper which list all the desserts and drinks! What you can order is written on a blackboard which hangs on the wall.
Tip: Go after 20.00 and order some Buchteln, sweet rolls filled with jam. You will avoid the crowd, you will have the chance to taste some delicious Buchteln and if you are lucky enough, you are going to meet happy girls sitting alone and writing poems in a dark artistic atmosphere which remains the same since Hawelka took over the cafe in 1939 . Until 2011 you could meet Leopold sitting at its entrance but unfortunately not any more. But you can still smell the aroma of Buchteln, a culinary delight, that Josefine used to bake.
Dorotheergasse 6, Vienna
When you pass through the red velvet curtain that stands behind the door, a whole different world is revealed to you. Old wooden floor, royal chandelier, and an addictive flavor of divine chocolate.
Why should you come to Demel?
Demel has everything: a history which goes back to 1888, its downtown location, delicious desserts, and creativity. Here, chocolate is not seen as just candy, but as fine art. Personally, I like to put Demel in my plan because it makes my day. January is not one of my favourite month. Apart from the freezing cold, January means a lot of university exams and many hours spent in front of books. I know, it is exactly as how it sounds: not so pleasant. In days like these, a piece of chocolate speaks directly to my soul. Let me guide you through an extraordinary realm of sweetness through my photos and enjoy without remorses.
What would Sacher Torte be like without Vienna and what would Vienna be like without Sacher Torte?
Some things are so connected to each other, that you cannot even imagine them apart.
You can find Sacher Torte in other countries but they are done exquisitely in the country they originated from.
Today we said “Let’s pretend that we are tourists” and jumped into the cafe of the Hotel Sacher. When the sky turns grey, a good friend and that famous piece of chocolate cake with whipped cream next to it is all I need to feel happy.
