Café Hawelka

Every old coffee house in Vienna has a story. Did you know that this coffeehouse is where the love story between Leopold and Josefine took place? Leopold began to work in the Deierl restaurant, where he met Josefine. They got married and they later opened Café Hawelka in Dorotheergasse.
One more exciting thing to mention is that there is no menu; say no to a usual menu made of paper which list all the desserts and drinks! What you can order is written on a blackboard which hangs on the wall.

Tip: Go after 20.00 and order some Buchteln, sweet rolls filled with jam. You will avoid the crowd, you will have the chance to taste some delicious Buchteln and if you are lucky enough, you are going to meet happy girls sitting alone and writing poems in a dark artistic atmosphere which remains the same since Hawelka took over the cafe in 1939 . Until 2011 you could meet Leopold sitting at its entrance but unfortunately not any more. But you can still smell the aroma of Buchteln, a culinary delight, that Josefine used to bake.
