At the end of May, I joined a group of journalists and together we flew from Vienna to Athens with Aegean Airlines on a press trip organized by the Greek Tourism Board.

I actually joined two trips powered by the Greek Tourism Board in the course of the last two months. Let me make it a little bit more clear for you.

On the first press trip we visited Athens, Ioannina, ZagorochoriaSivota, Parga, Paxoi, and Antipaxoi. After that trip ended, I came back to Vienna for a few days and then left again for Karpathos for the second press trip. Yeap, I am lucky, I know!

On the first trip, Athens was actually just a stop over, because there is no direct flight from Vienna to Ioannina. The two first photos of this blog post were taken at Grecotel Cape Sounio, where we had a welcome lunch by the pool. I loved everything about this short visit at Cape Sounio. The 5 star resort is situated in an idyllic location and has great views of the sea and Temple of Poseidon. They treated us to delicious Greek mezedes. We couldn’t have started the press trip in a better way. It got me immediately into Greek spirit and in the mood for holidays (although this trip wasn’t 100% for pleasure).

After the welcome lunch at Grecotel Cape Sounio, we went back to the International airport of Athens to take the flight to Ioannina (3rd photo of this blog post). We arrived quite late in Ioannina and spent the night at Hotel du Lac. Many thanks for the lovely welcome and dinner. If you ever find yourself in Ioannina and you are looking for accomodation you might want to check out this 5 stars hotel.

The next day we drove to Zagorochoria. Zagorochoria is a cluster of 48 traditional picturesque villages in the Zagori region. Here, we found very friendly locals who did anything they can do to ensure we had a nice time. This is something we have to mention and appreciate. What was the first thing we did once we arrived? We went for rafting in the Voidomatis river. Although I am not so much into sports, as you might have already guessed, I was excited to try out this adventurous activity. It was very nice and I was pretty sure that it would be so beforehand!

My hotel in Zagorochoria was the Aberratio Boutique Hotel. My room was very beautiful and the owner was such a warm-hearted person. My photos will give you a taste of how Zagorochoria is and what you should expect from this place, but if you need more info, please check here and here.

Now if you wanna know what I would choose if  I had to choose between mountains or sea, I would go for the sea. Blame it on my origin. My mother comes from a Greek island and I grew up in a city that was surrounded by water, Athens. I like blue hues more than green hues. I like to listen to the sound of waves. I like to dive in the sea and swim with the fishes (and sometimes with the sharks like in the Maldives). And after all, I am pisces. However the itinerary I describe in this blog post is for people who are seeking both: sea and mountains. I think it’s a great combination and you will definitely not get bored.

I am so happy that I had the chance to visit all those beautiful places and to feature them all now on The Viennese Girl blog. I hope I will always be able to show you more places from my homecountry, Greece, and inspire you to visit them for yourself.

If you have any question, please leave a comment and I will get back to you asap.

If the first day of June already finds me on a Greek island, this is a sign that this summer is going to be great”. This was one of the thoughts that crossed my mind upon arrival at the airport of Karpathos island.

Even though I grew up in Greece, I never had the chance to visit Karpathos. With my family and friends, we used to always spend summers in Samos, where my mom has a family house there. I can’t tell you enough how happy I was, when the official Greek Tourism board invited me to join a group of journalists and gave me this chance to finally visit Karpathos island, take some photos and publish them on The Viennese Girl blog.

Things that I truly loved in Karpathos island during my stay:

  • everything about the traditional village Olympos.
  • the restaurant Under the tree in Finiki. The owner cooked for us something I will never ever forget in my life. It was one of the best dishes I have ever eaten: Crab Salad!!! To die for!
  • waking up to the seaview from my hotel room every morning.
  • a little bit of “me time” on the last day and discover the island on my own. I looked for green soaps made of olive oil to buy, treated myself twice with iced coffee latte in a cafe called Anoi all day bar in Pigadia (the town of the island) and ate lots of Yogeat Frozen Yogurt.

If you consider spending your summer holidays in Karpathos island, make sure to book your tickets with myAustrian Holidays that flies you directly from Vienna to Karpathos twice a week until the 28th of September this year.

And just to get you in the mood for Karpathos, watch this video.

I gathered a few extra travel tips that might be useful for your holidays in Karpathos:

Restaurants we visited in Karpathos: Mama Maria in Pigadia, Under the Tree in Finiki, Petalouda in Arkassa, I zoi ton Aggelon in Pigadia, Kafe Skopi of Manolis in Mesochori.

Car rental companies: BudgetSofias car rental, Makris Travel in Pigadia.

Karpathos Diving Center Dinos in Pigadia

I’ve been to Crete twice in the past. I never liked it that much, to be frank with you, so I had no intention to visit that Greek island at least in the near future, since there are so many other Greek islands that I have never had the chance to visit and would love to visit. What I didn’t like in the past is that Crete is a big island and I was losing the sense of being in an island, so I guess, I am more a small island type of person.

My friend’s wedding though was a very good reason that brought me back to Crete the last weekend of August and I am glad that it happened so. I am glad that I had the chance to be in Crete one more time and to discover this island with a different point of view as the more we travel, the better traveler we become, we learn to appreciate things differently and we mature through this process.

Here are a few tips if you find yourself in Chania:

• Go to Pallas for breakfast.

• Visit Sketi Glika for something sweet.

• For exciting views over Chania go to Koukouvaya.

• For dinner and the best traditional Cretan Ntako go to Mesostrato.

Crete is undoubtedly beautiful and remember that you need time and a car to discover its beauties. Oh my gosh, how nice it would be to be there right now! ♥

August memories (10)

I know it has been quite quiet here lately but after I came back from holidays to Vienna, one event was coming after another, and instead of sitting home and working in front of the computer the evenings, I was drinking champagne and Bellini in beautiful terraces in Vienna. Who wouldn’t, right?

Now that I write this, I am back to Vienna, reminiscing about the August moments when I was doing nothing but chasing the best sunset day after day and was smitten with every beach and every village on a Greek island.

Those are the last Samos photos on The Viennese Girl blog for this year…I remember very well those summer days when I took those photos, the heat, how much I was sweating and how hard I was trying to stay indoors in the night to work for The Viennese Girl blog. Those August moments are now nothing but after summer blues. And the worst is that I am afraid that those August memories will haunt me the following 10 months until summer gets back.♥

Kalimera

Those are some of the photos that I took in the last days in Samos. It is very hot here and when it’s so hot, either you stay somewhere in a shadow or you spend the whole day on the beach until the sunset. I bet you don’t want to take photos moving around and sweat like a pig, like I did.

Those photos where taken in Vathi and Pythagorio. More precisely, the photo with the spectacular view of Pythagorio was taken from the balcony of Hera 2 Hotel in Pythagorio and this is one more Samos tip, just in case you are thinking of visiting Samos and looking for a hotel with views to Pythagorio, then this hotel is for you.

And if you come to Greece, remember this word: kalimera (in Greek: καλημέρα). Kalimera means both Good morning and Have a nice day.

When I get to the beach, I always look for a sun bed close to the water because I like listening to the sound of the waves. When I enter the sea, I see small fishes around me which bite me over and over again. If I don’t stay until late by the beach, I head to Pythagorio for afternoon strolls and after that to Two Spoons, which is my favourite cafe in the whole island. I always order fresh lemonade and profiteroles. The best profiteroles ever. No surprise if I get some extra kilos while on holidays in Greece because you can’t say no to food here and in the evening we usually end up in a taverna eating Greek salad, fried potatoes and other delicious treats. In the meantime, I try to snap some shots for The Viennese Girl blog.

There are many bars, restaurants, cafes in Pythagorio. My favourite cafes are Two spoons and Enigma. Look for them if you ever get to Pythagorio, which I wish you do.♥

From Samos with love is a collection of the photos that I took in the last days in different parts on this island, here and there. Consequently, this post includes everything that has to do with my life on this beautiful island and what I’ve seen around.

All the clothing items that are pictured on this post belong to the fashion shop 2 the little store, that my friends Eva&Stella have in Pythagorion. Visiting 2 the little store is one of my Samos travel tips, which I will include in one of the following blog posts, as many of you on Instagram have asked for Samos local tips and recommendations.

In those last days, while I am on holidays, apart from taking photos, it’s hard to find the time to work for The Viennese girl blog (because each blog post usually requires at least 5 hours work), and it’s even harder to find the words to write something down as my mind is totally empty but I guess this is the effect caused by the combination of happy holidays and summer mood. Nothing but love from Samos

Well, now you might think that I exaggerate if I say summer in Greece is not the same as in other countries, but on the other side, some of you, might have the same opinion, especially those who have been in Greece once for holidays. For all the others who don’t have the same opinion, may those pictures above be persuasive enough and change your mind. 🙂

However, I remember some years ago, I was so excited to spend one week in Mallorca in Spain for holidays and although I was initially very excited to get there, after one week it hadn’t met my expectations. My initial thought was that I should try something different and go somewhere else on holidays and not only in Greece, but as I said, that Balearic island in Spain didn’t conquer my heart and makes me think that summer isn’t the same everywhere. Summer doesn’t have the same taste and smell everywhere. ♥

Back to Paradise

Back to paradise, in other words, back to this beautiful island called Samos where I come every summer. My direct flight from Vienna to Samos had a delay of about 4 hours because of the strikes at the airport in Greece. I spent more hours waiting in the airport of Vienna than inside the airplane during the flight but I am here, so no complaints. I was supposed to land on the Greek territory at 15.00pm approximately and drive directly to the beach and even wore a bikini under my clothes, but because of the delay, my direct visit to the beach was postponed for the following day.

I had a very warm welcome by friends and family here, even fireworks in the sky. Apparently not for my arrival but for a local festivity in Pythagorion on that day. The day after my arrival we went to Tsamadou beach and spent the whole day there, then we headed to the village next to the beach, Kokkari, where we had an evening stroll before we get back home. On this post I share some photos of Kokkari.

So glad to see them all again, friends and family, and I enjoy my time by doing simple things that I missed so much, like eating cheese pie at 3.00 am in the night and drinking granita by the sea. So glad to be back to paradise and to call this piece of heaven on earth home sweet home.♥
