The Ultimate Greek Island Hopping Guide 2024

This island hopping was one more SOLO female travel for me. Well, partially, because my friend Chiara from Sicily came to join me in Koufonisia. So we did that part together.

It seemed that the Greeks (not all of course) are not particularly used to the idea of solo travel. So, when I dined alone at restaurants, I often received curious glances from those around me. Being a native Greek myself, I couldn’t help but thinking, they might be wondering, “What is this young lady doing alone? There must be something wrong about her!”

Well, surprise, surprise! There’s absolutely nothing wrong with her.

Solo female travellers in Greece

Solo female travelers are different, one step closer to discovering their life’s purpose. Their souls crave new experiences and adventures. They follow their hearts, they dance to their own rhythm. Traveling is their ultimate passion. They don’t wait for someone to accompany them on a journey; instead they book their tickets, arrange their accommodations, pack their bags, and embark on the next adventure.

Although society tends to shine a negative light on being alone, spending time alone can actually be incredibly beneficial. It demonstrates your ability to find happiness independently, without relying on others, which can be liberating and personally fulfilling. Embrace being your own person and relying on yourself first.

Greek island hopping 2024: Mykonos island

Mykonos, my first stop on this island-hopping adventure, was primarily chosen for its convenient airport connections. With direct flights connecting Vienna to Mykonos, I found myself in the heart of the Cyclades.

Arriving in Mykonos, I decided to stay for two nights before continuing my journey to Syros, the next island on my itinerary.

Greek island hopping 2024: Syros island

My second stop was Syros Island, with its beautiful streets and seaside cafes.

Syros island’s timeless charm has a way to captivate your heart. Its cobblestone streets in Ermoupoli, adorned with neoclassical buildings, pastel-colored facades, and ornate balconies, create an enchanting atmosphere and weaves a kind of magic on visitors.

The aroma of freshly baked pastries from local bakeries mingles with the inviting allure of seaside cafes. Here, you can sip a glass of wine and gaze at the mesmerizing azure waters of the Aegean.

Many thanks to my friends Christianna & Iosif who hosted me at their @yosifaki and gifted me 4 days of Greek summer bliss. Thank you for the generosity and kind hospitality.

Tinos Island

Tinos island was the third stop in my Greek island hopping. I am in love with this island because of its unpretentious and grounded vibe.

I’ve booked accommodation right by the beach and I was absolutely enchanted by the whole experience. Imagine having breakfast and dinner by the ocean, with the soothing sounds of the waves in the background.

Fun fact: Did you know that Tinos has its own little mermaid too? Not just Copenhagen!

Naxos island

Naxos island was the fourth stop in my Greek island hopping.

Out of all the islands I’ve explored, Naxos was my least favorite. Naxos felt quite stressful, making it hard for me to unwind. I also felt ignored at taverns as a solo female traveler, and I constantly had to navigate through hordes of tourists.

I found the Saint George area in Naxos to be a bit too crowded for my liking. Thankfully, I stayed in the island for only two nights. The tavernas were quite packed, resulting in long queues, and the breakfast experience was similar. Having concentrated juice instead of fresh-squeezed orange juice was disappointing. What was even worse is the 10.30 AM check-out time; it feels a bit absurd, almost as if they’re rushing you out to make way for the next guest. There’s hardly any time for a leisurely breakfast or proper packing; it’s quite stressful.

Now if you wonder why I visited Naxos…well, Naxos was the transit point from Tinos to Koufonisia, which is where I originally intend to go. My goal was Koufonisia, not Naxos.

My standards for travel are rather high, possibly because of my extensive global travels and stays in some of the world’s finest hotels. I prefer to be treated as a discerning traveler, not just another tourist. It’s my own oversight, really; at times, I seem to make the wrong choice in hotels. They may appear appealing on the internet, but upon arrival, discovering concentrated juices and a 10.30 AM check-out is a definite deal-breaker for me. I don’t voice complaints; instead, I simply choose not to return.

Koufonisia : The Unexpected Adventure on My Fifth Stop

The fifth stop of my island-hopping adventure brought with it a delightful twist of fate that transformed a planned three-night stay into a remarkable eight-night sojourn.

Koufonisia, with its tranquil beaches and idyllic scenery, was initially a brief stop on my journey, but destiny had other plans. What made this stop truly extraordinary was the arrival of my dear friend Chiara from Sicily. Her unexpected visit turned my solo adventure into an unforgettable shared experience.

We reveled in the pristine beauty of Koufonisia, explored its hidden gems, and indulged in the local culture together. The magic of Koufonisia, amplified by the presence of a cherished friend, allowed us to forge memories that will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

The island’s azure waters, golden sunsets, and warm hospitality became the backdrop for an adventure that surpassed all expectations. This unplanned extension of my stay in Koufonisia reminded me of the serendipity that often graces travelers and the extraordinary moments that arise when you embrace the unexpected. In the end, it’s these surprise twists that make our journeys all the more remarkable and our stories truly extraordinary.

Back to Mykonos – by accident

I missed my flight from Mykonos to Athens due to a delay in the ferry from Koufonisia. Under usual circumstances, this might have been a cause for concern, but, surprisingly, I found myself feeling incredibly excited about the situation.

I contacted the airline company, rescheduled my flight for the following day, and seized the opportunity to book a last-minute hotel room for me.

One of my life mottos is simple: you get what you pay for. This principle extends to my business as well. Hence, when I stumbled upon a last-minute offer for Branco Hotel in Mykonos, I didn’t hesitate to book, despite it not being a budget-friendly choice. I knew I was in for an extraordinary experience.

Branco Hotel lived up to my expectations, reminding me that sometimes, you must indulge and treat yourself. In the end, the memories and the quality of the experience make the investment more than worthwhile.

So, in a whirlwind of adventures and exploration, my Greek island-hopping journey continued, proving that every island has its own unique story to tell, whether you’re traveling solo or with a companion.

Hydra: The Grand Finale of My Island Hopping Journey

Hydra marked the splendid conclusion of my island-hopping adventure in 2023.

Hydra’s allure lies in its timeless beauty and unique charm. The absence of motor vehicles on the island, replaced by donkeys and cobblestone streets, sets the stage for a tranquil and almost poetic experience. As you stroll along the narrow alleys, adorned with whitewashed buildings and vibrant bougainvillea, you’ll feel transported to a bygone era.

The harbor at Hydra is a bustling hub of activity, where fishing boats and luxury yachts coexist harmoniously. Here, you can savor fresh seafood at waterfront tavernas, watch the world go by, and soak in the island’s laid-back atmosphere.

The true magic of Hydra comes alive in its sunset views. The moment the sun dips below the horizon and paints the sky in shades of orange and pink, you’ll realize why this island is so revered by travelers.

Hydra isn’t just a destination; it’s an experience that lingers in your memory long after you’ve left its shores. As the final stop in my island-hopping journey, it left me with a sense of wonder and a desire to return someday.

Reflections Throughout My 2024 Greek Island Hopping Journey

We often don’t realize how valuable something is until we lose it.

I left my home country 12 years ago, only to realize later that it’s the only place where I feel the happiest. The joy I experience by the sea might be rooted in the memories of my childhood, as psychologists suggest that our early experiences often shape our adult emotions.

Some of my best childhood memories revolve around summers spent on an island, and this could be the key to understanding my happiness by the sea. I also find it challenging to form connections with individuals who fail to grasp my deep affection for the sea.

I yearn for a lifestyle centered around tranquility rather than vacations. As a small business owner, success demands not only my energy but also a serene state of mind. Achieving this means embracing unhurried mornings and all the tranquility they bring. It’s essential to have the time and mental space to strategize for my business and rejuvenate my spirit.

In Vienna I’m experiencing a condition known as “Kleisoura,” a Greek term describing a strong aversion to staying indoors. This feeling has developed due to the trauma of the COVID years and the extended cold winters in Vienna, which confined me indoors for long periods. To cope, I’ve been requesting hotel rooms with balconies for the freedom to step outside whenever I need, and I even have a desire to sleep outdoors, under the stars.

The island life – the Greek way

Every time I said to a local islander that I would like to come and live on a Greek island they literally get SHOCKED and ask me why? You have to see their face expression…I laugh so much. They rush to tell you….there is nothing to do during the winter and there is so much loneliness.

Truth is, loneliness exists everywhere, and it can even be worse in big cities. Truth is also, on an island where there is nothing to do as they love to claim, maybe they don’t know, you can invent your own things to do, you can invent your own happiness.

In fact, some people who have spent all their life in capital cities crave for peacefulness and quietness that the island life can offer. Some other have spent most of their lives on an island and long for a bustling big city life.

Some people are happy with what they have, while others crave for….a change.

The ending of European summer fills my heart with melancholy, for in recent years, I’ve been a seeker of endless summers around the globe.

KARPATHOS TRAVEL GUIDE

I spent 11 days in Karpathos this summer. On a hot summer August day, I landed on this Greek island without having any expectations, yet with a lot of curiosity, excitement and an open heart. Curiosity for everything that Karpathos has to offer, excitement for all the things that were about to happen and an open heart to meet and love the locals and be loved back.

All thanks to Miss Foteini Fragkou, her family and friends who contributed to my visit and made it an unforgettable experience for me! I am now feeling happy to be in the position to compile a Karpathos travel guide with the best tips for an unforgettable vacation.

WHERE IS KARPATHOS

Karpathos is an island that’s a part of Greece and is located in the Mediterranean Sea. It’s only about 1 hour by plane from Athens, which makes it a popular destination for tourists looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Karpathos has many beautiful beaches, all with crystal clear water and golden sand. Some are more secluded than others so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to find your perfect spot.

WHY SHOULD YOU VISIT KARPATHOS ISLAND

One of the most stunning and rugged islands you will ever see, Karpathos in the Dodecanese is home to quaint villages and farming villages, vineyards, orchards and olive groves. Greek hiking trails and ancient churches are found on remote hilltops, hidden villages with little tourism, and hidden beaches undiscovered by the tourist industry.

Moreover, there are festivals and celebrations with traditional dancing and music, which last for days with genuinely friendly people.

Karpathos Travel Guide

If you like to be greeted with genuine hospitality, come to Karpathos. Karpathos is an island of astonishing beauty. Its rugged mountains covered with forest, its wild and rocky coastline, and its beaches all come together to create a wonderful experience.

BEST TIME TO VISIT KARPATHOS

Karpathos is best visited either at the beginning or at the end of the summer season. July and August are also great months to visit, but the island gets crowded. Lodging gets more expensive and dining options are less available.

A great way to avoid crowds is to go outside of peak season, which is May, June, and October. You’ll also likely find a cheaper hotel room this way.

HOW LONG TO STAY IN KARPATHOS

The ideal length of stay in order to see the best of Karpathos would be seven days. One week will allow you to get a clear picture of the island, as well as see some stunning sights. Additionally, if you are less time-sensitive, then a two week stay would give you ample opportunity to not only explore but enjoy the island as well.

How do you get to Karpathos island? Does Karpathos have an airport?

There is an airport on Karpathos, which gives it a distinct advantage over other Greek islands. Charter flights are available from European cities to Karpathos.

If a direct flight from your city to Karpathos island is not available, you may want to fly via Athens. There are also a number of ferries that take visitors to the island. I, however, wouldn’t recommend the ferry because the ride can last long. It is worth it only if you have a car.

Karpathos Travel Guide

Do you need a car in Karpathos? How to get around?

The lack of public transportation on the island is troublesome. A car is the best option to get around. Renting a car gives you all the freedom and flexibility you need to explore the island on your own terms.

Be careful of winding roads when in Karpathos. I should also mention, make sure to stock up on motion sickness pills before your flight, as you may not find any in the pharmacy once you land on the island. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

HOW TO SPEND YOUR TIME IN KARPATHOS

The island of Karpathos is the second largest island in the Dodecanese Islands, located in Greece. If you’re looking to get out of the hustle and bustle of big city life, you’ll find that Karpathos will provide the vacation you’ve been dreaming of.

With its breathtaking views and unique characteristics, it’s no wonder this island attracts thousands of tourists each year to its stunning beaches, beautiful landscapes and friendly people. From hiking through lush forests to exploring ancient ruins, this island has something to offer to everyone.
